As part of its 2023 SRC Week and homecoming celebrations, the Our Lady of Providence Girls' Senior High School (SHS) in Kwasibuorkrom in the Jaman South Municipality of the Bono Region called on the government and charitable donors to support the school's efforts to upgrade its infrastructure.

The OLP SHS's headmistress, Sister Regeenamma Zangiti, who placed the call, claimed the school had a number of difficulties, including a lack of funding and a severe infrastructural shortage that caused overcrowding in the classrooms.

She argued that the school deserved its due share of infrastructure and pointed out that despite having few resources, it had accomplished a lot, showing that with more resources, it might do even better.

Although the school has gained national recognition, according to Sister Zangiti, its level of growth is not the finest.

Challenges

Upon visiting the school, it was discovered that the kitchen was in bad shape, forcing caterers to cook meals outside, where they were exposed to dust and insects.

It was revealed that because of the facility's inadequate drainage system, which prevented water from getting out when it rained, the whole kitchen became flooded.

It was discovered that the kids also ate their meals in a dining hall that had been abandoned, which presented a lot of health risks due to the meals being consumed in a dusty setting.

The unfinished project, which is around 80% finished, was started in 2016 but never finished.

The school also has a severe lack of staff housing, with just eight of the 115 employees working on-site.

The headmistress claimed that the circumstances made it exceedingly challenging to uphold student discipline and handle situations when they arose.

Once more, the school faces difficulties with an unstable water supply and a lack of access routes.

Students must get up early in order to compete with residents of a nearby village for water since the campus's intermittent water supply is unreliable.

Lack of transportation to transport students and staff to classes is another significant issue facing the institution, as are activities and educational excursions, according to the school administration.

When a school needed to transfer a significant number of pupils, it was forced to rely on sister schools for buses or use public transportation.

Achievement

Sister Zangiti claimed that despite the difficulties, the second-cycle school with the category "A" ranking had achieved great academic success.

She said that in the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the school came in third nationally.

According to Sister Zangiti, when the averages for the 2020 and 2021 WASSCE scores were evaluated, the school was deemed the top school in the nation.

She said that the school's cadet band was the only group from the middle zone to participate in non-academic activities.
