The VRA is a proponent of the adage that a healthy body and a good mind go hand in hand. Therefore, the authority seeks to encourage and ensure that the health of those living in its impacted communities improves through the application of its CSR agenda.
As a result, the VRA makes significant investments in the communities' access to water, sanitation, and health-related infrastructure. Disease eradication, public health, and sanitation are the three main areas in which the Authority meets the health requirements of communities.
Eradication of Disease
The Asuogyaman District Health Management Team and the VRA continue to work together to eradicate diseases including bilharzia, malaria, and other waterborne illnesses. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that outlines strategies for the elimination of malaria with assistance from the Centre for Communication at John Hopkins University
In an effort to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the VRA also offered routine fumigation and disinfection services for five settlements and all workplaces.
Community Health
In villages around the Volta Basin, the VRA routinely implements mass drug administration programmes under its Schistosomiasis Control Programme. Through yearly funding allocations for the execution of the intervention, the VRA has collaborated with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on the Schistosomiasis Control Programme for the past six years.
Studies conducted by the GHS in 2018 showed a decline in urinary schistosomiasis prevalence over the prior year in 42 villages in six districts, including South, North, and Central Tongu, South Day, Ada East, and Shai Osudoku.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) made a significant contribution in 2015 to the search for a long-term solution to the schistosomiasis outbreak in affected areas. In more than 300 riverine settlements scattered across 11 districts within the operating regions of the VRA, this entailed the provision of potable water and sanitation services as a more long-lasting method of halting the development of bilharzia.
The first three settlements to benefit from its water system are Amlalokope in the North Tongu District, Korankyi in the Asuogyaman District, and Sedorm.
