People from all walks of life in Ghana, including bookworms, have begun converging on the W.E.B. Dubois Memorial Centre in Accra to express their condolences to the family of the late eminent Ghanaian novelist, Professor Ama Ata Aidoo.

This came after the family yesterday (June 7) unveiled a book of condolences at the WEB Dubois Memorial Centre in Accra in memory of the late Professor.

The grieving and sympathisers can visit the family of the brilliant dramatist, author, and poet at the Memorial Centre from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day from yesterday through tomorrow, June 9.

Dignitaries

On the first day, prominent people from the community stopped by to sign the book of condolences, including lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata, former National Media Commission Chairman and member of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) advisory board Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, University of Ghana Chancellor Mary Chinery-Hesse, Ghanaian writer and filmmaker Kwaw Ansah, and 2020 PPP presidential candidate Brigitte Dzogbenuku.

Old Wesley Girl's senior high school students were also there, particularly her classmates from the 1958 year group and Pan Africanists from the Diaspora.

The place had a melancholy ambiance, with family members and sympathisers all dressed in black to represent their mourning state.

Ama Ata Aidoo's departure, according to Nana Gyan-Apenteng, was sorrowful and signalled the end of an important period in the history of the nation.

Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo, together with Efua Sutherland and Joe Degraft, was the final author from the independence age who "emerged and defined the Ghana situation through literature," according to him, and for that reason this is a very important time.

The younger generation, which is already the generation coming after her, is being given the torch in a sense.

Now that the torch has been passed on, we must remember our obligations as writers and keep a record of what is happening in our lives right now.

The late Ama Ata Aidoo would be honoured with the proper state funeral, according to Nana Gyan-Apenteng.

Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo was cited in Mrs. Chinery-Hesse's books as a role model for young people, particularly young Ghanaian women, since she demonstrated the virtues of educating a female child.

Even though this is a very sad occasion, she said, "I think it's good that we are all here because we appreciate the life she lived, and we are here in our numbers because we honour her so much and the effort she has put into the art of living, and everyone remembers her, especially because of her writing."

The deceased was a "solid woman," according to Mr. Kwaw Ansah, who was also a creative artist. She was passionate about the African struggle for freedom and development, so even though she was dead, her ideas would live on because "the generation coming will follow Ama Ata Aidoo so that we get out of the gutters we are in," he said.

Prof. Aidoo served as a trailblazer with extensive literary expertise, according to Effie Simpson, president of the Wesley Girls Senior High Institution Old Girls Association, who stated that the institution will always highlight her accomplishments.

Short History

Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo served as the life chairperson of the Ghana Association of Writers' annual literary festival, known as GAWBOFEST, until her death on May 31, 2023, at the age of 81.
