Barcelona weighing up €1 million move to re-sign former defender amid La Liga interest .
Last summer, FC Barcelona allowed Mika Marmol, a product of La Masia, to leave the club on a free transfer to FC Andorra. However, Barcelona cleverly included a buyback clause worth €1 million as well as a 50% sell-on clause in the agreement. Marmol, a talented left-footed central defender, had been with Barcelona since 2018 and made his senior debut under Xavi Hernandez in May of the previous year, although he only appeared once for the first team.
Following his move to FC Andorra, the 21-year-old had an impressive 2022/23 season, featuring in 38 matches across all competitions and contributing with a goal and an assist. Marmol's ball distribution and positioning skills caught the attention of several La Liga clubs, sparking serious interest in his services, according to reports from SPORT.
Now, Barcelona is contemplating whether to exercise their €1 million buyback option during the upcoming summer transfer window. Despite strengthening their defense with the imminent arrival of Inigo Martinez, Barcelona has concerns about Martinez's fitness record from the previous season at Athletic Club. Additionally, Eric Garcia is likely to be sold, and Chadi Riad is expected to be loaned out, potentially creating room for a new defender. Marmol, being familiar with the club and available at a reasonable price, could be an appealing option.
However, Barcelona has not made a definitive decision and has asked FC Andorra for some time to evaluate whether re-signing Marmol is in their best interest. The club's new sporting director, Deco, has been occupied with other transfer negotiations, such as those involving Ilkay Gundogan and Vitor Roque, and has not had the opportunity to fully consider the Marmol deal. Barcelona wants to assess all possibilities before reaching a conclusion.
Meanwhile, Marmol has attracted interest from clubs like Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano, and RCD Mallorca, so his eventual destination remains uncertain. The coming weeks will shed light on whether Barcelona exercises their buyback option and brings the talented young defender back to the club or if he continues his career elsewhere in La Liga.
