Former Barcelona youngster brought for €5m joins new club after a disappointing run .
Barcelona has struggled to find a suitable replacement for Dani Alves at the right-back position since his departure from the club in 2016. Despite recruiting several players over the years, they have been unable to fill the void left by the Brazilian veteran.
One of the players brought in with high expectations was Moussa Wague. Barcelona signed the promising young talent from Belgian club Eupen in 2018 for a fee of €5 million. Wague had caught the attention of many with his impressive performances at the World Cup, where he became the youngest African scorer in the tournament's history.
However, Wague failed to live up to his potential at Barcelona. He was only given a few opportunities to play for the first team before being sent on loan to Nice in January 2020. After his loan spell in France, he was loaned out again to Greek side PAOK in the summer, but his time there was marred by a serious knee injury.
Barcelona decided to release Wague last summer, ending their disappointing experiment with the young full-back. He subsequently joined HNK Gorica but was later released by the Croatian club in December. Now, Wague has signed with Anorthosis Famagusta in the hope of resurrecting his career.
While Barcelona has had success in signing and developing young players in recent years, Wague's case is certainly considered a failure. The club will undoubtedly aim to learn from this experience and avoid similar situations in the future, ensuring they make better choices when it comes to recruiting and nurturing promising talents.
The right-back position has remained a problematic area for Barcelona since Dani Alves' departure, and finding a suitable replacement continues to be a priority for the club. The failed venture with Moussa Wague serves as a reminder of the challenges they have faced in filling the void left by the Brazilian legend. Moving forward, Barcelona will seek to identify and acquire players who can effectively contribute to the team's success, ensuring that they can strengthen their squad without encountering similar setbacks.
