In an intense clash on Monday night, Arsenal displayed both brilliance and resilience to secure a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

The match began with a lackluster first half for Arsenal, as they struggled to convert their possession into goal-scoring opportunities.

However, the turning point came early in the second half when Gabriel Martinelli's clever play led to a quick free-kick that found Eddie Nketiah in the box.

Nketiah was fouled by Crystal Palace's Sam Johnstone, resulting in a penalty. Martin Odegaard calmly converted the penalty after a VAR review.

Throughout the game, Arsenal maintained a high level of pressing, while Crystal Palace attempted to counter with bursts of pace.

Jordan Ayew posed a threat for Arsenal's defense, but the Gunners gradually gained control in the opponent's half. Nketiah came closest to scoring before the break, hitting the post, and later missing an opportunity after a skillful pass from Declan Rice.

In the midst of Arsenal's attacking efforts, Ayew's counter-attack was thwarted by William Saliba's impressive sliding tackle.

Arsenal's breakthrough arrived just nine minutes into the second half. Martinelli's quick thinking, combined with Thomas Partey's smart holdback of Jeffrey Schlupp, allowed Nketiah to sprint towards goal and earn the penalty.

VAR confirmed the legality of Partey's move, and Odegaard converted the spot-kick.

However, Arsenal faced a big blow when Takehiro Tomiyasu received a second yellow card for halting Ayew's counter-attack. Despite the relentless pressure from Palace, Mikel Arteta made strategic substitutions, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was largely untested.

Roma distance from Greenwood as Jose 'doesn't wish to be associated with him'

Roma have denied they are interested in signing Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, according to reports.

Greenwood is set to leave Old Trafford after United announced on Monday that the player and the club have mutually agreed to go their separate ways.

The decision comes following a six-month internal investigation into Greenwood's behaviour after he was accused of attempted rape and controlling behaviour in January 2022. The charges were dropped in February 2023.

Mail Sport revealed on Monday that several clubs have expressed interest in signing Greenwood, including Jose Mourinho's Roma.

However, Italian outlet Il Tempo, via Roma Press, have claimed Roma do not want to bring Greenwood to the club, as they look to distance themselves from the 21-year-old.

It is understood that Mourinho, who managed United while Greenwood was in the academy after two previous spells at Chelsea, does not want to be associated with the former England international following the accusations made against him.

Roma are looking to bring in a striker before the transfer window closes after losing Tammy Abraham to a serious knee injury at the end of last season.

The ex-Chelsea star is not expected to return until 2024, leaving Roma short of options up front.

Andrea Belotti started in attack for Roma's opening game of the season on Sunday and scored twice in a 2-2 draw against Salernitana, but he failed to net a single goal in Serie A last term, and Mourinho may feel he cannot rely on him for a whole campaign.

Meanwhile, Greenwood is now likely to have to look elsewhere for his next move.

He could be offered a fresh start by Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, who are reportedly weighing up offering him a £10m-a-year deal.

A move to the Saudi club would see him join up with Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson in the Middle East.

Multiple Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray, are also keeping tabs on Greenwood as he prepares to make his return to football.
