The row between Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag escalated on Tuesday after the Manchester United winger deleted his Instagram account.
Sancho was kicked out of the United squad and completely ostracized by Ten Hag after a messy disagreement that threatened to spiral out of control. After being removed from the squad against Arsenal on September 3 due to poor training, Sancho accused his coach of spreading "completely false" information and turning him into a "scapegoat".
Although he later deleted the post, the 23-year-old winger still refused to apologize to Ten Hag for his behavior. He has since been banned from using any first-team facilities at United's Carrington training base, including the team dining room.
Sancho's teammates, including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford, tried to encourage him to apologize and reinstate the team, while the Professional Footballers' Association suggested mediation.
But now it seems Sancho is retreating deeper into his shell ahead of the possibility of leaving United in the January transfer window. United fans noticed on Tuesday morning that Sancho had deactivated his Instagram account, leaving his 10 million followers in the dark.
At the time of this writing, his account on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he has 2.2 million followers, is still active, but he has not posted since August 6 after deleting his post following the Arsenal match. When asked about Sancho on Friday, ahead of the Premier League match against Burnley, Ten Hag said: “It depends on him.
As for the rest, we are preparing for Burnley, and that is our top priority. He will not be a member of the team. The club's latest public statement on Sancho is simply: “Jadon Sancho will continue to participate in an individual training program outside of the first team, pending resolution of the team's disciplinary matter.
United are said to be ready to sell Sancho in January after briefly considering a potential move to Saudi Arabia in the summer. They want to recoup most of the £73 million they paid to Borussia Dortmund two summers ago.
Sancho appeared uninterested in joining a club in the Saudi Pro League earlier this month, but he may now have changed his mind due to his treatment by United. The situation between Sancho and Ten Hag reached a "stalemate", with the player unable to return until he decided to apologize to his boss.
Sancho is under contract with the club until June 2026 and is paid around £250,000 per week, which could complicate a January transfer. Another obstacle is his record with United: Sancho only contributed 12 goals and 6 assists in 82 appearances over the past two seasons.
