Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, the host of Onua TV’s morning show "Maakye," has made serious allegations against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana. According to Captain Smart, the NPP is planning to create an “artificial coup” in October 2024 to disrupt the country’s political stability. He claims this move is intended to cover up the party’s alleged corruption and failures.

Captain Smart, a vocal critic of the government, stated on his show that the NPP’s plans are part of a larger agenda. He referred to a document known as "Agyapedie," which he claims proves his allegations. He mentioned that former President J.A. Kufuor was aware of this document, suggesting that the information is credible.

Captain Smart warned that any military personnel involved in this alleged plot would face consequences. “Ghanaians will make sure any soldier who will participate in this will not go scot-free,” he declared. His statements serve as a wake-up call to the public, urging them to be vigilant and prevent such plans from materializing.

Adding to these concerns, Justice Kwaku Annan, a former host of "The Seat Show" on Net2 TV and now with CTV, has echoed similar allegations. Annan stated that other journalists are also aware of the NPP’s supposed plans, although he did not disclose their identities. He emphasized the importance of alerting the public to any attempts to disrupt the electoral process. “Any fake military coup to topple this government so you use the backdoor to start the whole process, stop it,” Annan warned.

Amid these accusations, Fitch Solutions, a research and data firm, has predicted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the upcoming general elections on December 7. The London-based firm has been forecasting this outcome since last year. According to a recent survey, 54 percent of respondents preferred the NDC’s candidate, John Mahama, for the presidency.

Mike Kruiniger, Associate Director of Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, discussed these predictions during a Mid-Year Review for Sub-Saharan Africa. Kruiniger highlighted that current economic conditions in Ghana are likely to influence voter preferences. He noted that economic management and job creation are critical issues for voters, which could disadvantage the NPP given the recent economic difficulties the country has faced.

These developments suggest that the political landscape in Ghana is becoming increasingly tense as the December elections approach. The allegations of an artificial coup and the economic challenges highlighted by Fitch Solutions point to a potentially contentious and closely watched election season. As Ghanaians prepare to vote, the importance of transparency, vigilance, and informed decision-making cannot be overstated.
