One of the sour notes from Barcelona’s victory over Girona on Sunday was an injury to Dani Olmo, which saw the Spain international forced off with a muscle strain just after the hour-mark. It is more serious than first thought, and will rule him out for up to a month.

Barcelona:

Tests conducted this Monday morning on Dani Olmo have revealed that the FC Barcelona forward has injured his right hamstring. He is expected to be unavailable for the next four to five weeks.

It comes as a blow to the team and player after Olmo had so quickly slotted in his new life at the club and under manager Hansi Flick, scoring in his first three league games, the first time a new player has done that since 2011, and helping the team to maintain what up to now has been a one hundred per cent record in the competition.

Olmo has a thigh problem, and while it was initially suspected that he would miss just a week or perhaps two at the most, Sport say he will be out for three to four weeks. The likelihood is that he will not return before the October international break, which begins in three weeks’ time.

Barcelona will be without their playmaker for their Champions League debut against AS Monaco, as well as a hard trip to La Ceramica to face an in-form Villarreal. In addition, he is all but ruled out for clashes with Getafe (H), Osasuna (A), Young Boys (H) and Alaves (A). Their next clash after the international break is Sevilla at home on the 20th of October, which Olmo should be fit for, with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid up next after that.

De Jong returns to group training with Barcelona five months after injury

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong remains a major question mark, with his fitness and potential return to action completely unknown. On Monday morning, de Jong took a step forward in his recovery.

The Dutch midfielder has been recommended surgery by the club, which would rule him out for the rest of the year, but he has decided to opt for a more conservative treatment thus far. After trying to increase the intensity of his workload last week, de Jong had to again take a step backwards. This week however he returned to working with the group say Sport, completing part of the training session with the other players. He was also joined by Gavi, who for the fourth session in a row worked with the group for some of it.

It remains to be seen when de Jong will return, or if he will indeed be able to avoid surgery. The 27-year-old has not been in action for the last five months, after an injury in April against Real Madrid. While he tried to return for Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, de Jong had to miss out after suffering a relapse.
