Harry Kane has become the highest English goalscorer in Champions League history as he moved ahead of Wayne Rooney with a stunning four-goal showing.

Rooney's 30 goals in 85 top-flight European games was the leading mark for an Englishman, but was eclipsed on Tuesday night thanks to a stunning haul for the striker. Kane scored number 30 for Bayern Munich with a first-half penalty against Dinamo Zagreb and then took his tally all the way to 33 during a sensational second half during their 9-2 win.

Kane is already the leading scorer for the England men's national team, again overhauling Rooney at the top. The former Manchester United forward notched 53 goals in 120 appearances for the Three Lions, with Kane's tally 68 and counting from 100 outings.

And his record in Europe is similarly prolific reaching his 33rd goal in just his 45th game in the competition. On a night where records went tumbling, he also became the first Englishman to score four in a single Champions League game AND the first to net three from the spot in the same match.

Kane will be hoping to rocket up the list this season, with Bayern hoping for a deep run in a competition that will already include more games than ever before. The German champions reached the semi-finals last term, dumping out Arsenal along the way, before losing out to eventual champions Real Madrid in the final four.

He managed eight goals in his first 12 Champions League games for Bayern, having found the net 21 times during his time with Tottenham.

His impact at Bayern has been staggering, despite a maiden campaign which saw the Bavarian giants fail to win a trophy. But Kane smashed a Bundesliga record previously held by Erling Haaland last time out - becoming the fastest ever player to notch 50 goal contributions, doing so in just 35 matches.

Kane's latest efforts move him into joint 25th - level with Fernando Morientes - going past Rooney, Kaka, Samuel Eto'o and Franciso Gento and Bayern great Arjen Robben all in one night. He has some way to go if he is to get anywhere near the top five however.

Real Madrid legend Raul is currently fifth with 71 goals, with fellow Los Blancos icon Karim Benzema next with 90. Robert Lewandowski's 94 put him third - and he will have the chance to add to that tally this season with Barcelona. But it's then a huge gap to second and Lionel Messi with 129 goals, trailing his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo who has a staggering 140 in 183 matches.
