Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, has reaffirmed the Commission' s commitment to fairness and transparency in the lead- up to the 2024 general elections. She emphasized that the EC is dedicated to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties, engaging with stakeholders, and addressing any concerns in line with the country' s constitution and electoral laws.

Mensa made these remarks during a meeting with former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who led a delegation from the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to engage with the EC leadership as part of their pre- election mission in Accra. The discussions revolved around key electoral issues such as the voters' register, the process for declaring results, and overall election preparedness.
Mensa highlighted the Commission' s ongoing efforts to demonstrate the transparency and robustness of its processes, assuring that the EC is ready to conduct peaceful and credible elections. She also stressed the EC' s independence and adherence to due process to maintain national peace throughout the electoral process.

In response, Jonathan commended the EC' s dedication and transparency, noting that the Commission' s willingness to address concerns from other stakeholders reflects its competence. He underscored the crucial role of electoral management bodies and security agencies in ensuring the success of peaceful elections and praised Ghana for its longstanding reputation for peaceful democratic transitions. Jonathan urged the nation to continue upholding its democratic principles to set an example for the rest of Africa.
He concluded by reiterating the importance of maintaining Ghana' s high rating in democratic practice and expressed confidence in the success of the upcoming election.
" Over the last few months, we have shown that our processes are transparent and robust to undertake peaceful elections, and we are ready, " she said. The Commission, she explained, was an independent body and would follow due processes in all its undertakings to maintain peace.
Jonathan commended the Commission, saying, " We met other stakeholders, and some concerns were raised which we presented to the Commission, and after our meeting with the leadership, we are satisfied with the response and have no iota of doubt about the competence and willingness to do what is right. "

The electoral management body, he noted, was passionate and demonstrated commitment to conduct successful elections.
