In a landmark move toward greater digital inclusion in Africa, Google has launched Twi voice search, making it easier for millions of Ghanaians to interact with technology in their native language. This new feature, which is now available on Google Voice Search, Gboard’s talk-to-type, and Google Translate’s voice input, allows users to search, type, and translate using Twi, one of Ghana’s most widely spoken languages.

This development is part of Google’s broader initiative to expand support for African languages and make digital tools more accessible. With the addition of Twi and 14 other African languages, Google is now reaching over 300 million people across the continent. Key languages added include Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Nigerian Pidgin, Somali, Shona, Chichewa, and Tswana, demonstrating Google’s commitment to connecting diverse communities across Africa.

The Twi language integration was developed through a collaboration with Google’s AI Research Center in Accra, Ghana, marking the importance of local partnerships in making technology more relevant and effective for African users. This launch is part of Google’s mission to make information universally accessible and reflects its focus on local language technology that speaks directly to African cultures.

The Managing Director of Google Africa, Alex Okosi, commented on the launch, saying, “This technology will make a difference to over 300 million more people across the continent, enabling them to interact with the web using just their voice. It’s one example of how Google in Africa is building technology for Africans and the world.”

The introduction of Twi voice search also emphasizes Google's view that "the next decade will be Africa’s digital decade," as described by Matt Brittin, Google’s President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He emphasized the importance of making tech tools accessible to Africans in their own languages as a key part of driving digital progress.

With Twi now available on Google Voice Search and Gboard, more Ghanaians can leverage digital tools to access information, communicate, and perform everyday tasks in a language they are comfortable with. This update also serves as a major step toward increased digital inclusion for Ghana, bringing new opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities across the country.

As Google continues to expand its language offerings, it’s paving the way for a more connected, inclusive, and digitally empowered African continent.
