Senior CAF Media Officer, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has attributed the Black Stars’ recent struggles to frequent changes in coaches.
Under the Kurt Okraku-led administration, five coaches have managed the senior national team. CK Akonnor was appointed as Kwesi Appiah’s successor but was eventually replaced by Milovan Rajevac.
Following the Black Stars’ poor performance at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, Rajevac was replaced by Otto Addo on an interim basis for the World Cup playoffs against Nigeria. After leading the team to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, Addo remained head coach but resigned after the team’s early exit.
After Addo’s resignation, Chris Hughton, previously the team’s technical advisor, was appointed but was dismissed after the team’s group-stage exit at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast. In March, the Ghana FA reappointed Otto Addo on a 34-month deal.
With the Black Stars struggling to make an impact, Sannie Daara, a former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, believes the frequent coaching changes have negatively affected the team’s performance. He urged patience as Otto Addo builds a stronger squad.
“We defeated Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup with a very young team. The momentum should have continued despite the elimination, but we couldn’t sustain it,” he told Asempa FM.
“I believe the frequent changes in coaches have hurt the team and impacted their confidence. We cannot perform well at tournaments or even against minor teams. We are building a young team, so we must exercise patience,” he added.
Currently, the Black Stars sit third in Group F with just two points after four games. They will face Angola and Niger in the final round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, traveling to Luanda to play Angola on November 15, followed by a home game against Niger Republic three days later.
