2025 AFCON Qualifiers: It Will Be Disappointing If Ghana Doesn’t Qualify – Michail Antonio
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers are heating up, and one of the most talked-about players in the race has been Michail Antonio, the Jamaican-born forward for West Ham United. Antonio, who has been in prolific form for both his club and country, has expressed his concerns over Ghana's qualification for the prestigious continental tournament, making it clear that it would be a major disappointment if the Black Stars fail to secure their place in Côte d'Ivoire next year.
Ghana, one of Africa's most successful footballing nations, has a rich history in the AFCON, with four continental titles (1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982) to their name. However, the Black Stars have been in a state of transition over the last decade, with varying degrees of success in international tournaments. Their recent performances in qualification campaigns have been inconsistent, leading to concerns that they might struggle to qualify for the 2025 edition of AFCON.
Speaking candidly about the matter, Michail Antonio, who has represented Jamaica at the international level but has Ghanaian roots, shared his views in a recent interview. Antonio's father, a Ghanaian, has always maintained a strong connection to the country, which has kept the forward closely following the fortunes of the Ghana national team. Despite playing for Jamaica, Antonio has frequently spoken of his admiration for Ghanaian football and the potential of the Black Stars.
“It would be really disappointing if Ghana doesn’t qualify for the 2025 AFCON,” Antonio remarked. “They have the talent, they have the infrastructure, and they have the pedigree. Ghana is one of the top footballing nations on the continent, and to not see them at AFCON would be a huge blow for African football.”
Ghana is currently engaged in a tense battle in Group E of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, where they are competing against formidable teams like Madagascar, Angola, and the Central African Republic. Their qualification hopes have been given a boost by a few solid performances, but there is still a lot of work to be done in the remaining fixtures. The Black Stars will need to maintain focus and consistency if they are to secure a top-two finish in their group, which would guarantee automatic qualification.
One of the key factors contributing to Ghana’s recent struggles has been the ongoing rebuilding process. The team has undergone several changes in terms of both management and player personnel, with new coach Chris Hughton taking over the reins in 2023. Hughton, the former Republic of Ireland and Brighton & Hove Albion manager, has brought in a fresh perspective, but the road to qualification has been bumpy at times.
Despite the challenges, Antonio remains optimistic about Ghana's chances. “They have a strong pool of players, from established stars to rising talents, and with the right guidance and support, they can definitely qualify. The Black Stars have always been a team to watch at AFCON, and it would be hard to imagine an Africa Cup of Nations without them,” he said.
For Ghana to qualify, players like Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Andre Ayew must continue to perform at a high level, while younger talents like Kamaldeen Sulemana and Daniel Afriyie Acquah will need to step up and deliver in crucial matches.
As the qualifiers draw to a close, all eyes will be on Ghana to see if they can secure their place in next year’s tournament. For Antonio, who has never represented Ghana on the international stage, the Black Stars’ qualification would be a personal triumph, as he continues to watch his heritage play an important role in the global football landscape.
The road to Côte d'Ivoire remains challenging, but if Ghana can find their rhythm, there’s every reason to believe they will be back on the continental stage, much to the relief of Michail Antonio and fans across the globe.
