Mamprugu Youth Responds to Kusaug Youth Movement’s Allegations of Media Bias
The Mamprugu Youth Association (MYA) has issued a strong rebuttal to recent allegations by the Kusaug Youth Movement (KYM) accusing certain media houses of bias in reporting issues concerning the ongoing tensions in Bawku. The KYM had claimed that some media outlets consistently portrayed the Kusaug people in a negative light while favoring narratives aligned with the Mamprugu faction.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Mamprugu Youth Association described the accusations as "unfounded and deliberately crafted to mislead the public." According to the MYA, media outlets have only reported facts, adding that the alleged bias is a reflection of KYM’s unwillingness to accept divergent perspectives.
"The Kusaug Youth Movement must understand that media houses have an obligation to report events based on evidence and verifiable sources," the statement read. "What they perceive as bias is, in fact, the truth being revealed. We reject their attempts to silence narratives that do not align with their agenda."
The MYA also emphasized that the escalating tensions in Bawku are a result of deeply rooted issues that require honest dialogue and mutual respect. They accused the Kusaug leadership of inflaming tensions through inflammatory rhetoric, which they claim has contributed to the volatile situation in the area.
"Our brothers and sisters in Kusaug must recognize that peace cannot be achieved by perpetuating falsehoods. Instead, we call on them to engage in constructive dialogue and work towards sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the region," the MYA stated.
The Association further urged media houses to remain steadfast in their commitment to impartiality, encouraging them to amplify voices advocating for peace and unity in the region. They called for calm among their members and reiterated their desire for peaceful coexistence between the Kusaug and Mamprugu communities.
The statement concluded by calling on government and security agencies to intensify efforts in ensuring safety and stability in Bawku.
The back-and-forth between the Kusaug Youth Movement and the Mamprugu Youth Association reflects the deep-seated divisions that continue to challenge efforts to restore peace in the troubled region. Observers have called for mediation by neutral parties to resolve the longstanding dispute.
As tensions remain high, stakeholders are being urged to prioritize peace and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could exacerbate the situation.
