Veteran Ghanaian football administrator, Alhaji Grusah, recently called for the resignation of Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). This demand arose after the Black Stars, Ghana’s national football team, failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to be held in Morocco. The team’s disappointing performance left them at the bottom of Group F with only three points, having failed to secure a single win in the qualification campaign. Speaking on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite program, Grusah did not hold back in criticizing Okraku’s leadership, asserting that his tenure has not benefited Ghanaian football. He believes that a new direction is necessary to restore the country’s footballing pride.
Grusah emphasized that his call for Okraku's resignation stems from a desire to see improvement in the sport. He stated that if Okraku refuses to step down voluntarily, he would support any legitimate efforts to remove him from power. His dissatisfaction is not limited to Okraku alone; Grusah went as far as appealing to the government to intervene. He urged President Akufo-Addo and the Sports Minister to dissolve the GFA entirely, arguing that such a bold move would not trigger any sanctions from FIFA. According to Grusah, a complete overhaul of the football association is crucial for addressing the issues that have plagued Ghanaian football in recent years.
In response to the ongoing discontent, the GFA’s Executive Council has scheduled a meeting to review the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON. This meeting is expected to address the future of the national team and the leadership under Okraku. The calls for changes are not limited to the administrative level, as criticism has also been directed at the coaching staff and team management. Many in the Ghanaian football community believe that a shift in leadership could lead to the revival of the Black Stars, who have a rich history in African football. The situation has drawn mixed reactions from fans and stakeholders, reflecting the deep-rooted passion for football in Ghana and the high expectations that come with it.
