Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has successfully led Sudan’s national football team, the Falcons of Jediane, to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This milestone comes after a tense and hard-fought goalless draw against Angola in the final round of Group F qualifiers. With this draw, Sudan secured second place in the group standings, accumulating 8 points, just behind group leaders Angola. Sudan’s successful qualification for the prestigious tournament is a remarkable feat, given the numerous challenges the country’s team has faced in recent years.

The qualification is particularly notable as it represents Sudan’s return to the AFCON stage after a 12-year absence. The team last qualified for the competition in 2012, and since then, they have struggled to make a mark in international tournaments. Historically, Sudan's national team has faced several difficulties, both on and off the field. The country's sole AFCON victory came in 1970 when Sudan hosted the event. Since then, the team has reached the knockout stages only once, highlighting how significant this recent achievement is for Sudanese football.

Appointed earlier in 2024, Kwesi Appiah’s journey with the Sudanese team has been anything but easy. His three-year contract came amidst a time of considerable political instability in Sudan. Due to ongoing internal conflicts and political turmoil, the team has been unable to play their home matches on Sudanese soil, forcing them to compete in neutral venues abroad. Despite these obstacles, Appiah and his team have managed to defy the odds, building a squad capable of competing at the highest level.

Following the final match against Angola, Appiah’s emotions were on full display as he celebrated the achievement in the dressing room. Accompanied by his assistant coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu and goalkeeper coach Eric Amponsah, Appiah danced to the popular song ‘Aseda’ by Ghanaian artist King Paluta. The scene was one of joy and relief, a testament to the hard work and dedication the coaching team had put into leading Sudan back to the continental stage.

This qualification is a significant boost not only for Sudanese football but also for Appiah’s career as a coach. Having previously managed Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, Appiah took on the Sudanese challenge with a determination to revive the team's fortunes. His leadership, along with the contributions of his support staff, has been instrumental in guiding Sudan through a challenging qualification campaign, which was marked by the team’s resilience in away fixtures.

Sudan’s achievement comes at a time when the country’s sports scene has been largely overshadowed by its political struggles. The opportunity to participate in the 2025 AFCON offers a chance for the nation to unite and rally behind their team. Many Sudanese fans hope that this qualification will mark the beginning of a new era for the national side, inspiring future generations of players and bringing renewed energy to the country's sports community.

As Sudan prepares for the 2025 AFCON, expectations are high. The team aims to make a strong statement in the tournament, seeking to move beyond their traditional role as underdogs. With Kwesi Appiah at the helm, Sudanese fans are optimistic about their chances. Appiah's experience, combined with the team's newfound confidence, could potentially lead to a deep run in the competition, marking a turning point for Sudanese football on the continental stage.

This success story underscores the power of perseverance and effective leadership in sports. Despite the adversity faced, Sudan’s national team has proven that with the right guidance and dedication, it’s possible to overcome even the most challenging circumstances. As they look forward to the 2025 AFCON, the Falcons of Jediane are poised to write a new chapter in their football history, one that could see them return to prominence and recapture the glory they last tasted over five decades ago.
