The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has recently honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 Vice Presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), by naming a newly constructed student hostel after him. This recognition comes in light of Dr. Prempeh's significant contributions to Ghana's education sector, especially during his tenure as the Minister for Education. The dedication ceremony was a major event on the university’s campus, highlighting his efforts in championing educational development and infrastructure improvements. The hostel, now known as the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel,” is a symbol of his commitment to creating better conditions for higher learning institutions. It is expected to house over 5,000 students, offering a solution to the ongoing accommodation difficulties faced by many students on campus.

During the ceremony, Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, the Chairman of the UPSA University Council, praised Dr. Prempeh’s leadership in the education sector. He acknowledged the former Minister’s instrumental role in securing funding for the state-of-the-art facility, emphasizing how his efforts went beyond financial support to ensuring quality and sustainability in educational spaces. This infrastructure project is seen as part of a broader initiative to meet the increasing demand for quality tertiary education in Ghana. According to Dr. Konadu, the hostel’s completion is a testament to the importance of effective leadership and dedication in driving educational reform. Dr. Prempeh’s tenure as Minister for Education was marked by various initiatives aimed at expanding educational access, notably the Free Senior High School policy, which continues to impact the lives of many young Ghanaians.

The Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, also expressed his gratitude for Dr. Prempeh’s contributions, emphasizing the long-lasting influence of his policies and projects on Ghana’s educational landscape. Professor Amartey highlighted the transformational changes brought by Dr. Prempeh, particularly in creating an enabling environment for students and educators alike. He noted that naming the hostel after Dr. Prempeh was a fitting way to honor his enduring legacy and dedication to improving educational standards in the country. This recognition comes three years after UPSA awarded Dr. Prempeh an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree, further acknowledging his efforts in the education sector. At the naming ceremony, Dr. Prempeh expressed his heartfelt thanks to the UPSA community, reaffirming his commitment to supporting educational institutions. The event, attended by dignitaries, faculty members, and students, served as a momentous occasion in UPSA’s history, underscoring the university’s dedication to celebrating leaders who have made substantial contributions to education in Ghana.
