John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the current government led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), linking its governance to the struggles of Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars. Speaking during a campaign tour in the Eastern Region on November 19, 2024, Mahama expressed dismay over the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, a historic low for a team that has been a source of pride and unity for Ghanaians. He attributed this setback to what he described as the general decline of the country under the NPP administration, emphasizing that the same issues affecting governance have also seeped into sports and other areas critical to national identity.

Addressing a crowd at the Akim Oda lorry station, Mahama underscored the broader challenges facing Ghana, pointing to the deteriorating performance of the Black Stars as symbolic of the state of the nation. He lamented how Ghana, once a consistent AFCON participant, had failed to qualify while countries with significant difficulties, such as Sudan, managed to secure a spot. Mahama asserted that this failure reflects a lack of effective leadership and governance, suggesting that the administration’s mismanagement has not only impacted the economy but also the morale and infrastructure needed to sustain national pride through sports. He encouraged Ghanaians to reflect on this decline and use the upcoming elections as an opportunity to bring about meaningful change.

Mahama called for a new direction for the country, one that would revive both its economic prospects and its cultural symbols like the Black Stars. He expressed confidence that an NDC government would restore hope and pride, ensuring that Ghana regains its footing in areas such as sports, which he views as vital to the nation's identity. He urged Ghanaians to vote peacefully in the December 7 elections, emphasizing the importance of democracy in holding leaders accountable. With a vision centered on renewal and progress, Mahama portrayed the rejuvenation of the Black Stars as part of a broader effort to rebuild Ghana’s spirit and pride, rallying citizens to support the NDC for a brighter future.
