Sam Pyne, the Mayor of Kumasi, has fiercely rejected the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s recent allegations that Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah Opoku, a senior military officer, is involved in a plot to rig the 2024 elections. Pyne described the accusations as "senseless" and "unfounded," emphasizing that even a child could see through the baseless nature of the claims. The NDC had raised concerns about potential military involvement in election manipulation, which they argued could undermine the transparency of the upcoming polls.
In his response, Pyne, a staunch supporter of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), dismissed the allegations as part of a broader strategy by the NDC to destabilize the political environment ahead of the election. “It’s completely unfounded and senseless to make such baseless claims. Anyone with common sense knows that this is nothing but an attempt to create fear and panic among the people,” he stated. Pyne went further to underscore that such accusations were not only harmful to the country’s political stability but also disrespectful to the military and other institutions of state, which have consistently remained neutral in Ghana’s democratic processes.
The NDC’s allegations have become a key talking point as the 2024 general election approaches, with the opposition party accusing the NPP of attempting to manipulate the electoral process. However, Pyne firmly rejected these claims, stating that the NPP is committed to a free and fair election, with no intention of interfering with the integrity of the voting system. He pointed out that the military, under the leadership of Brigadier General Opoku and others, plays a crucial role in ensuring peace and security during elections but does not engage in any form of partisan involvement.
Pyne’s comments align with the NPP’s broader stance that Ghana’s democratic institutions, including the military, are neutral, professional, and committed to upholding the country’s democratic values. He urged the public to ignore the divisive rhetoric from the opposition and focus on issues that genuinely impact the nation’s progress.
As Ghana heads into the 2024 elections, political tensions are expected to rise, and the discourse around election integrity, fairness, and potential misconduct will continue to be a central issue. Pyne’s strong rejection of the NDC’s allegations adds to the mounting pressure on all political parties to ensure the elections are conducted peacefully and transparently.
