The Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Seth Panwum, has strongly advocated for the immediate dismissal of Otto Addo, the head coach of Ghana's national football team, the Black Stars. This call came after Ghana’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium. The loss effectively ended Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON, marking a bleak moment for the team. The Black Stars ended the qualification campaign at the bottom of Group F with only three points from six matches, failing to win a single match and missing out on a chance to compete in the upcoming tournament in Morocco.
In an interview with Angel FM, Panwum expressed his frustration, pointing out that Addo had been given a performance contract but had not met expectations. He argued that the coach’s failure to secure a spot in the prestigious AFCON tournament, despite having a talented squad, signaled a need for immediate change in leadership. Panwum’s remarks reflect the disappointment felt by many fans and officials who had hoped that the Black Stars would perform better in this critical qualifier. Ghana’s campaign began poorly with a 1-0 loss to Angola, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger, and included further setbacks with two draws and two defeats against Sudan. In the final stages, Ghana only managed another draw with Angola before succumbing to Niger in their final match.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to meet soon to review the Black Stars' underwhelming performance and make decisions about the future of the coaching staff. Otto Addo’s position is now under scrutiny, as Panwum and others feel that his tenure has failed to deliver the desired results. However, some individuals within the football community, such as former Black Stars player Laryea Kingston, have suggested that Addo should be allowed to continue with the World Cup qualifiers. As discussions continue, the GFA faces a crucial decision on whether to retain Addo or make a change in leadership. The outcome of this review will determine the Black Stars' direction moving forward as they aim to recover from this qualification failure and build a stronger team for future competitions.
