GFA dissolves Black Stars Management Committee after AFCON qualifier collapse

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the dissolution of the Black Stars Management Committee following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The decision was made during an Executive Committee meeting held on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, and was confirmed in a press statement released on Thursday, November 21.

The GFA acknowledged the contributions of the committee members, expressing gratitude for their service to Ghanaian football.

“We announce the immediate dissolution of the Management Committee of the senior national football team, the Black Stars. In doing so, we sincerely thank the members of the Committee for their service to Ghana Football over the years.”

The committee, chaired by Mark Addo with Akwesi Agyeman as Vice Chairman, faced criticism for their limited involvement in key matches. Reports indicate that Mark Addo, Kwame Ofosu Bamfo, and Akwesi Agyeman were often absent during the qualifiers, with Randy Abbey stepping in as the delegation leader on several occasions.

Ghana’s failure to qualify for AFCON marks a significant low point, ending a 21-year streak of consistent participation. The Black Stars finished last in Group F, which included Niger, Sudan, and Angola. This is the first time the four-time AFCON champions have missed the tournament since 2002.

The team’s poor performance in recent years, including group stage exits in the last two AFCON tournaments, has sparked widespread disappointment among fans.

The GFA has acknowledged the team’s struggles and issued an apology to Ghanaians, promising to work towards achieving better results in the future.
