The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) has announced that it will commence a comprehensive cleaning and inspection of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) starting on Monday, November 25, 2024. This maintenance exercise is part of WAPCo's routine efforts to ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of the pipeline that stretches from Nigeria to Ghana.
The cleaning and inspection process is a critical regulatory requirement that aligns with industry best practices. It will cover the entire pipeline infrastructure, from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana, helping to maintain the pipeline’s integrity and ensure the safety of operations across the region.
The exercise will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will begin on November 25 and will focus on the onshore section of the pipeline in Nigeria. This phase is expected to last for 10 days. WAPCo has assured the public that it has coordinated with all relevant stakeholders and does not anticipate any major disruptions to gas transportation services during this period.
The second phase of the project, which involves cleaning and inspecting the offshore section of the pipeline from Badagry in Nigeria to Takoradi in Ghana, will take place in January 2025. During this phase, WAPCo will temporarily suspend the reverse flow of gas from the Western Region of Ghana to Tema, which will affect several key facilities in the region. These include facilities in Tema, Ghana, Lomé, Togo, and Cotonou, Benin. Additionally, WAPCo plans to replace subsea valves in these locations to improve operational safety.
The maintenance work is part of WAPCo’s ongoing efforts to maintain the pipeline’s reliability and ensure the uninterrupted supply of gas to the region. The company has also emphasized that the measures being implemented are designed to enhance safety and efficiency in line with international standards.
WAPCo’s commitment to this maintenance work underscores its focus on long-term sustainability and the reliability of energy supplies to West Africa. The company continues to prioritize the safety of its infrastructure and the uninterrupted supply of gas to its customers across the region.
