FINALLY OUT! NDC OR NPP: who is really winning the 2024 General Elections
The 2024 Ghanaian General Elections are set to be highly competitive, with the two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), battling for dominance. As the elections approach, multiple surveys and public opinion polls have provided insights into the likely outcomes, although predicting the winner remains difficult due to the fluid nature of the race.
Recent surveys have highlighted a tight race between the NPP, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo’s Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and the NDC, led by former President John Dramani Mahama. A number of opinion polls indicate that the presidential race could go either way, with Bawumia’s popularity growing in certain regions due to his promises of economic recovery and digital transformation. On the other hand, Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, remains a strong contender with his focus on rebuilding the economy, tackling inflation, and addressing unemployment.
A survey conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in mid-2024 found that the NDC had a slight lead over the NPP in some regions, particularly in the Ashanti and Western North regions, which are crucial swing areas. The poll showed that many Ghanaians felt disillusioned with the Akufo-Addo administration’s handling of the economy, especially with rising inflation, unemployment, and debt. However, the survey also revealed that Bawumia’s promise of a more inclusive digital economy and a commitment to the Free SHS (Secondary School) program continued to resonate with the youth and rural voters.
On the other hand, the NPP is positioning itself as the party that navigated Ghana through turbulent times, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent global inflation crisis. Surveys suggest that Bawumia’s leadership in economic recovery, coupled with infrastructure development, such as road construction and power supply, remains popular with urban voters.
While surveys point to a competitive race, the NPP appears to have an edge in urban areas, where infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives have been key talking points. The NDC, however, maintains a strong foothold in the northern and central regions, largely due to Mahama’s long-standing support base.
Ultimately, the outcome of the 2024 elections will depend on voter turnout, regional dynamics, and the effectiveness of each party’s campaign in addressing the nation’s economic challenges. With both parties seemingly neck and neck, the winner will be determined by who can galvanize their supporters and secure key swing constituencies.
