The Overlord and Paramount Chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area, the Paramount Queen Mother, all Queen Mothers, women groups in Kusaug, the media, and distinguished ladies and gentlemen, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your presence today.
We, the Kusaug Women for Justice (KWJ), gather here to address pressing matters affecting our community and to shed light on issues that have recently been misconstrued by certain groups. First, we wish to express our immense gratitude to His Royal Majesty Zug-Raan, Bawku Naba Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for his tireless efforts toward peace and unity. His wisdom and love for humanity continue to be a beacon of hope for all women and the people of Kusaug.
We also extend our appreciation to the media for their swift response and unwavering commitment to amplifying the voices of women and addressing the challenges facing our community.
Today, we convene to address the misinformation and false narratives being spread by a Mamprusi-organized women’s group pretending to represent other tribes in Bawku. This group has claimed to have faced harassment and exclusion from the Azoka Market Complex, also known as “Aloag Kim Nor” Market.
Let us set the record straight: the Kusasis are peaceful, industrious, and hospitable people who have always embraced other tribes, including Dagombas, Moshies, Bisas, Builsas, Ashantis, Hausas, Fulanis, and Gonjas. The claims that Kusasis have prevented any group from patronizing the market are baseless, fabricated, and intended to tarnish the reputation of our people.
However, while we uphold the values of peace and inclusivity, we have made a conscious decision not to engage in commerce with the Mamprusi settlers and their allies due to the ongoing tensions. This stance is not born out of hatred but rather a necessary step to avoid direct confrontations and maintain peace. As such, we will firmly oppose any attempts by the Mamprusis or their allies to infiltrate our markets. They have their own market, the Bawku Central Market, and should remain there rather than intruding into spaces that belong to us.
We also call upon the security agencies to cease escorting Mamprusis into our markets. Such actions undermine our efforts to maintain peace and avoid conflict. Kusasis have resolved to distance ourselves from Mamprusis until they acknowledge our rightful status as the landowners and traditional authorities of Bawku. It is unacceptable for those who rely on our resources to disrespect and undermine us.
Have we not suffered enough at the hands of these Mamprusis and the current government? The political interference and impositions, including curfews and restrictions on motorbike use, have disproportionately punished our people, particularly women. The military has not only harassed us but has also been implicated in the loss of lives and the destruction of property. These injustices have pushed us to the limit, yet we remain resolute in our pursuit of justice and self-determination.
The recent actions of the Mamprusi group claiming harassment are part of a calculated attempt to destabilize our community and shift blame. It is disheartening that these fabrications are being used to paint Kusasis as aggressors when, in reality, we have endured years of oppression and marginalization.
To the Mamprusis, we say this: our patience and goodwill are not infinite. If you wish to coexist peacefully, it is imperative that you recognize the authority of the Zug-Raan and cease all actions that undermine our sovereignty. We will not work with the Mamprusis until the imposter chief is removed from Bawku and the Mamprusis offer a formal apology to the Zug-Raan for their role in perpetuating this conflict. Only then can we begin to rebuild trust and work toward a harmonious future.
The Kusaug Women for Justice stand united in our resolve to defend our land and uphold the dignity of our people. We will not be intimidated or silenced by false narratives or political interference. Our strength lies in our unity, and we will continue to fight for what is rightfully ours.
We call on the government and relevant authorities to address these issues with the urgency and fairness they deserve. The ongoing conflict in Bawku is not just a local issue; it is a matter of national significance that requires decisive action to prevent further loss of lives and property.
To our fellow women, let us continue to stand strong and support one another in these trying times. Our voices are powerful, and together, we can effect change and secure a brighter future for the generations to come.
In conclusion, we reiterate our commitment to peace, justice, and the well-being of our community. We call upon all stakeholders to join us in this endeavor and to prioritize the needs and aspirations of the people of Kusaug.
Thank you for your attention and support.
May justice prevail, and may peace reign in Bawku.
