EC Collaborates with GJA, GIBA on Media Access at Collation Centres
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has initiated discussions with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) to streamline media access to collation centres during elections. This move comes as the EC aims to enhance transparency and ensure smooth reporting in the upcoming elections.
Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, emphasized the importance of media presence at collation centres in maintaining public trust in the electoral process. She underscored that the collaboration with GJA and GIBA seeks to establish clear protocols for journalists' entry and operations at these centres.
During a meeting with representatives from both associations, the EC proposed measures to balance accessibility with security and efficiency. Among the issues discussed were accreditation procedures, the number of media personnel allowed, and ensuring a fair representation of both state and private media outlets.
The GJA and GIBA welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to strengthen democracy by guaranteeing the media’s role as a watchdog. However, they also stressed the need for the EC to adopt a transparent accreditation process to avoid favoritism and ensure inclusivity.
The discussions follow concerns raised in previous elections about restricted media access to collation centres. Journalists have often faced challenges such as limited space, unclear guidelines, and delays in obtaining necessary permits. Addressing these issues, the EC stated its commitment to creating an enabling environment for journalists to perform their duties without interference.
The EC also highlighted the critical role of accurate and timely information dissemination during elections. “A free and independent media is essential for credible elections. We are working to ensure journalists can operate freely while upholding the integrity of the collation process,” Jean Mensa said.
This collaboration marks a significant step in improving election reporting in Ghana. It reflects the EC’s acknowledgment of the media's influence in shaping public opinion and fostering trust in democratic institutions. By engaging key stakeholders, the EC aims to minimize disputes and misinformation, contributing to a peaceful and credible electoral process.
As plans take shape, the GJA and GIBA have assured their members of continuous updates and urged journalists to prepare adequately for the elections. With these efforts, Ghanaians can expect more transparent and efficient election coverage in 2024.
