In a heartwarming display of support for the empowerment of women and the transformation of vulnerable groups in Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recently congratulated 22 young women who have successfully graduated from a training program designed to equip them with skills to become bus drivers. These women, who were once part of the "Kayaye" (head porters) community, have now taken a significant step towards economic independence and empowerment.
The graduates, who were formerly engaged in the physically demanding and often perilous work of carrying goods for a living in the city, are now certified bus drivers after undergoing a comprehensive training program. The initiative, which aims to break the cycle of poverty and provide women with skills that can open doors to better employment opportunities, is part of the government's broader effort to promote gender equality, economic inclusion, and job creation.
The training, which involved both theoretical and practical lessons, covered essential driving skills, road safety regulations, customer service, and vehicle maintenance. Upon completion of the program, the 22 women were awarded certificates, marking their successful transition into the professional driving workforce.
During the graduation ceremony, Vice President Bawumia expressed his deep pride in the achievements of the graduates, emphasizing that their success was a testament to the government's commitment to providing opportunities for marginalized groups, especially women.
"I'm happy for your transformation," Dr. Bawumia said, addressing the graduates. "Today, you have proven that with the right skills and opportunities, you can break free from the challenges you face and make meaningful contributions to society. You are a shining example of how determination, hard work, and training can change lives."
He went on to highlight that this initiative was in line with the government's efforts to support women and ensure that they have equal access to economic opportunities. According to the Vice President, empowering women not only enhances their lives but also contributes significantly to the development of the entire nation.
