John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, has announced an ambitious development plan for farmers in the Ejura-Sekyeredumasi Constituency as part of his broader agenda to transform Ghana's agricultural sector. Speaking during a rally in Ejura on the first day of his six-day tour of the Ashanti Region, Mahama outlined his vision to enhance productivity and empower farmers through the establishment of a Farmers’ Service Center.

This predominantly farming constituency is one of the NDC's strongholds in the Ashanti Region, and Mahama’s plans aim to solidify that support while addressing key challenges faced by local farmers. He emphasized the urgent need for equitable systems in the agricultural sector, promising reforms to ensure fairness in grain and cereal sales.

Mahama explained that the Farmers’ Service Center would be equipped with 15 tractors and a variety of farming tools to support agricultural activities. Farmers would register with the center to access these resources, along with fertilizers and other essential inputs. "If you request a tractor to work on your farm, it will be granted. If you need fertilizer, you will go to the Farmers’ Service Center, where all your farm inputs will be delivered," he explained.

Beyond agriculture, Mahama also promised to build a modern market in Ejura to boost trade and provide better facilities for local traders. This new market, he believes, will enhance the economic viability of the area and create a conducive environment for business growth.

Recognizing the critical role of women in the local economy, Mahama announced plans to establish a branch of the Women’s Development Bank in Ejura. This initiative aims to provide financial support to women entrepreneurs, helping them expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

In a move that has garnered widespread attention, Mahama pledged to double the current one-day public holiday allowance for Muslims during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, granting two holidays under an NDC government. This promise underscores his commitment to inclusivity and respect for Ghana's diverse cultural and religious heritage.

Mahama also addressed the ongoing Agenda 111 hospital project initiated by the current administration, assuring constituents that an NDC government would prioritize its completion. This pledge reflects his focus on improving healthcare infrastructure across the country.

In his address, Mahama cautioned against “skirt and blouse” voting, a practice where voters split their choices between presidential and parliamentary candidates from different parties. He urged the people of Ejura to vote uniformly for the NDC to maximize the party's ability to deliver on its promises. "We don’t want any ‘skirt and blouse,’" he stated firmly.

Beyond Ejura, Mahama revealed plans to establish another Farmers’ Service Center in Wiomoase, located in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency. This initiative aims to revitalize farming activities in the area and provide farmers with the tools and resources they need to thrive.

He also assured constituents of his commitment to attracting investors to build factories in farming communities. These factories, Mahama argued, would enhance agricultural productivity by processing raw materials locally, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy.

Mahama’s focus on equitable pricing systems is another cornerstone of his agricultural agenda. He vowed to abolish the controversial size 5 measurement system used in maize pricing, replacing it with a fairer size 4 standard. According to him, this change would ensure that farmers receive better compensation for their hard work and reduce exploitation in the agricultural value chain.

Concluding his rally, Mahama reaffirmed his dedication to the people of Ejura and Ghana as a whole. He urged constituents to prioritize development and unity in their voting decisions, emphasizing that collective action is essential for meaningful progress. "You will pay a small fee after selling your farm produce. We will ensure that fairness and equity are at the heart of all our policies," he said.

Mahama’s plans have been met with a mix of optimism and cautious hope. For the people of Ejura and other farming communities, his proposals represent a potential turning point in addressing longstanding challenges in agriculture and rural development.

As the December elections draw closer, Mahama's promises highlight the NDC's vision for a more inclusive and prosperous Ghana. By addressing key issues such as agricultural productivity, women’s empowerment, and healthcare, Mahama aims to position himself as a leader capable of driving transformative change.

The rally in Ejura set the tone for Mahama's Ashanti Region tour, where he is expected to continue sharing his vision for a brighter future for all Ghanaians. Whether his promises will resonate with voters and translate into electoral success remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Mahama is determined to make his case for a second term as Ghana’s president.
