John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has likened himself to a "retired army general" returning to active duty to rescue Ghana from its current challenges. Speaking to district and municipal Imams in the Ashanti Region on December 2, 2024, as part of his six-day campaign tour, Mahama pledged to lead Ghana out of economic turmoil and governance difficulties.

Addressing the gathering, Mahama said, “If we go to war and encounter difficulties, we go back to call the retired general to come back and lead us. This is a clear illustration of myself because I am a retired general. I went to rest, but it is time to come back. My party has nominated me to lead because we are in a difficult period.” He expressed gratitude for the prayers and support of the Islamic community, emphasizing the importance of their spiritual guidance in shaping policies and governance.

### Commitment to Economic Recovery

Mahama highlighted Ghana's pressing challenges, including economic mismanagement and rising hardships, and assured the Imams of his administration’s commitment to implementing sound policies. “We are at a critical juncture as a nation. My government will focus on stabilizing the economy, creating jobs, and improving the quality of life for every Ghanaian,” he stated.

As part of his broader strategy, Mahama vowed to tackle inflation, stabilize the cedi, and introduce measures to support local businesses. He also emphasized the need for prudent fiscal management and accountability in government operations, pointing out that the current administration’s policies had failed to address the plight of ordinary Ghanaians.

### Legal Recognition for Islamic Marriages

In response to concerns raised by the Islamic community, Mahama pledged to enact legislation that would officially recognize and legitimize Islamic marriages under Ghana’s constitution. He acknowledged the significance of this request, saying, “The Chief Imam has spoken about the need for a law legitimizing Islamic marriages. We have decided to address this issue as part of our commitment to inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural and religious practices.”

The promise to recognize Islamic marriages has been hailed by many as a progressive move to ensure equality and inclusivity within Ghana's legal framework. It also underscores Mahama’s commitment to addressing long-standing concerns of various religious groups in the country.

### A Call for Unity and Progress

Mahama urged the Islamic community to rally behind his leadership, emphasizing the importance of unity in achieving national progress. He noted that his administration would prioritize policies that benefit all Ghanaians, regardless of political or religious affiliations. “We must move forward as one people with a shared vision for a prosperous Ghana,” he said.

He also used the opportunity to reiterate his dedication to education and healthcare reforms. Mahama pledged to expand access to quality education and improve healthcare delivery systems, ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to essential services.

### The Campaign Trail

The visit to the Ashanti Region is part of Mahama’s efforts to consolidate support in a region historically considered a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). By engaging with various religious and community leaders, he aims to build alliances and demonstrate his commitment to addressing the unique needs of the region.

Mahama’s campaign theme, focused on restoration and transformation, resonates with many Ghanaians who have expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the economy and governance. His message of hope and renewal has garnered significant attention, positioning him as a formidable contender in the upcoming elections.

### A Resilient Leader

Mahama’s comparison to a “retired army general” reflects his resilience and experience in navigating complex challenges. Having served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2017, he brings a wealth of experience to the table, coupled with a renewed determination to address the country’s pressing issues.

As Ghana heads toward the December 7 elections, Mahama’s promises and strategic engagements signal his readiness to lead the nation toward recovery and growth. With a focus on inclusivity, economic stability, and legal reforms, he is poised to offer a compelling alternative to the current administration.

### Conclusion

Mahama’s address to the Imams in the Ashanti Region underscores his vision for a united, progressive, and inclusive Ghana. His pledges to stabilize the economy, recognize Islamic marriages, and implement policies that uplift every Ghanaian highlight his commitment to transformative leadership. As the elections draw closer, his campaign continues to gain momentum, offering hope to many who believe in his ability to steer the country toward a brighter future.
