In the early days of Ghana, it was said people were recruited into the Ghana army and other security forces based on their height, strength and structure. If they realise you are giant and strong, you are then taken for recruitment without checking any educational background.
Our system keep changing and now; such way of recruitment is rolled out. We are now in a system of new criteria which are, educational check, height, age, etc.
With the above current method or criteria mentioned which are looked at when recruiting security personnels; one must pass English Language, Mathematics, social studies, General Science and even other two (2) elective making six (6) subjects. Also, one must have a particular height and be of some age range. These new approaches for recruitment are perfect though but there is one i think it should be reviewed as earlier stated.
Firstly, we know being in any of the Ghana security services need someone who can read, write and speak English to be able to communicate efficiently amongst civilians at where he/she will be posted as they; the civilians might not understand his/her language.
Again, when one is send to keep peace outside the country (peacekeeping), English will be a communicating language among themselves since they might not understand each others language from different tribes.
Now, my area of misunderstanding which needs to be reviewed as said earlier is that, since English is outstanding as means of communication, Why do they consider Science, maths and social studies as passed; and evem addition to two (2) electives to be qualified to apply to any of the security services?
I think the system should be friendly enough to allow only pass Grade in English language as a major subject instead of concentrating or considering on the others as passed because when one is recruited, the rest of knowledge will be learnt and practiced on the field. I think the other subjects are not relevant to be considered passed before qualified to be recruited.
