Fire Disaster at Kumasi Central Market

A fire broke out at the Kumasi Central Market, leaving several traders devastated as their shops and goods were destroyed. The fire, which started late at night, spread rapidly, consuming large portions of the market. Many traders are now counting their losses, as items worth thousands of cedis were reduced to ashes.

This tragic event has reignited concerns about the government's delayed promises to rebuild sections of the market that were previously damaged by similar fires. Traders have expressed frustration, pointing out that these promises remain unfulfilled despite repeated assurances.

“This is not the first time a fire has destroyed our shops. Every time, the government promises to rebuild and provide better structures, but nothing has been done. We are left to suffer,” lamented one trader, who lost all her goods.

The Kumasi Central Market is one of the largest and busiest trading hubs in Ghana. However, its vulnerability to fires has become a recurring issue due to overcrowding, poor electrical wiring, and a lack of fire safety measures. Many traders are now demanding immediate action from authorities to prevent future disasters.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the recent incident but faced challenges accessing the affected areas due to the congested nature of the market. Officials have called for improved planning and enforcement of safety measures in high-risk areas like the Central Market.

In response to the disaster, some local leaders have called on the government to prioritize the reconstruction of the market. They believe building modern structures with proper fire safety mechanisms is the only way to protect traders and their livelihoods.

The recent fire has left many families struggling to cope with the financial and emotional toll. Traders are urging the government to take concrete steps to fulfill its promises, rebuild the market, and ensure better safety standards moving forward.
