Ebo Whyte’s love for 4Play

The mood of intrigue and excitement filled the National Theatre over the weekend as patrons gathered to watch Roverman Productions' latest play, 4Play. Written and directed by Uncle Ebo Whyte, this captivating play delves into the complex dynamics of love, hatred, and reconciliation.

The story revolves around Will and Tilly, a divorced couple who have not spoken to each other in a decade. Their strained relationship takes center stage when their daughter, Faith, makes a bold move by booking them in the same hotel suite on the eve of her wedding. Her hope is that this reunion will mend the rift between her parents, but what follows is far from a peaceful reconciliation.

Tensions escalate as the estranged couple’s unresolved issues and bitter past come to light, threatening to derail Faith's wedding plans. The drama intensifies with unexpected twists that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. As Will and Tilly prepare for their meeting, they expect to meet Faith’s prospective son-in-law. However, it turns out that the man they expect is not the one who arrives, but rather the hotel’s butler, Jasper, who has feigned the identity of their daughter’s fiancé.

Amid the unfolding chaos, themes of love, forgiveness, and reconciliation emerge. In a pivotal moment, Will and Tilly confess that, despite everything, they are still in love with each other. This revelation provides a touching, emotional turning point in the play.

The performance was well-received by the audience, who were drawn in by the perfect blend of humor, intrigue, and emotional depth. Uncle Ebo Whyte's storytelling was masterful, and the cast's performances were outstanding. Tilly, played by a talented actress, provided some comic relief with her seamless transition from an American accent to a typical Ga woman’s dialect, leaving the audience in stitches. Though Faith's portrayal had moments of low energy, the overall cast delivered a memorable and engaging performance.

4Play is the 57th addition to Uncle Ebo Whyte’s repertoire, following successful productions such as Take Over and I Want to Feed You. This marks the last play for the year after a series of well-received shows. Fans of Ghanaian theatre are in for another treat with the encore performance of 4Play this weekend. It’s a must-watch for anyone who enjoys well-crafted drama and thought-provoking themes.
