King Mohammed VI of Morocco recently presided over a Ministerial Council meeting to assess the country's progress on its bid to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal. During the session, Fouzi Lekjaa, the President of the Moroccan Football Federation and Minister of Budget, provided a detailed update on Morocco's bid. He highlighted that FIFA had given a positive evaluation of the country's readiness to meet the stringent requirements for hosting the tournament. According to a recent FIFA report, Morocco’s preparations exceed the necessary criteria, with particular emphasis on the impressive number of proposed stadiums, including plans for the construction of the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca. The development of such large-scale infrastructure projects is a key aspect of Morocco's World Cup bid.
The Council also discussed extensive plans to upgrade the country’s infrastructure in anticipation of the World Cup. These plans include modernizing stadiums, improving airports and national road networks, and enhancing various sectors such as hospitality, medical services, and telecommunications. King Mohammed VI emphasized the importance of creating an expanded committee to oversee the successful execution of these projects. This committee will be composed of government representatives, civil society members, experts from the African continent, and Moroccan diaspora members, all tasked with ensuring that Morocco meets the rigorous demands of hosting the prestigious event. The committee’s role will be critical in coordinating efforts across different sectors to make the bid a reality.
In addition to infrastructure development, Morocco is set to launch a major youth training program aimed at enhancing skills and increasing employment opportunities across the country. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the national economy and promoting the country as a prime tourist destination. The meeting also approved a series of international agreements designed to strengthen Morocco's relations with other countries, particularly in areas such as criminal justice cooperation, military ties, and the mutual recognition of driving licenses. These agreements are seen as a means to further integrate Morocco into the global community and facilitate smoother operations in preparation for the World Cup. Additionally, the Council discussed the restructuring of Morocco’s National Electricity Regulatory Authority into a more comprehensive National Energy Regulatory Authority, which will also oversee new energy sectors, including hydrogen production and storage.
