IGP Commends Police for Election Security
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has commended the Ghana Police Service for their dedication to maintaining peace and order during the political rallies of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the lead-up to the December 7 general elections.
Speaking at a recent press briefing, IGP Dampare highlighted the professionalism and vigilance shown by police personnel throughout these events. He praised their ability to remain neutral while ensuring that both parties could conduct their rallies safely and without incident. The IGP also pointed out that their work has been crucial in preventing potential violence and promoting a peaceful election atmosphere.
The rallies, which have seen large turnouts and passionate supporters, can often be flashpoints for disorder. However, the police have managed these gatherings with efficiency, avoiding unnecessary confrontations and ensuring that security is upheld. This effort, according to Dr. Dampare, reflects the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to ensuring a free and fair election process.
Dr. Dampare also expressed confidence that this high level of security and professionalism would continue throughout the campaign period and on election day itself. He emphasized that maintaining law and order is essential to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles. The IGP called on all officers to remain steadfast in their duty and assured them of the leadership's full support.
He further urged political parties and their supporters to cooperate with the police, reminding them that peaceful elections are in everyone’s best interest. Both the NPP and NDC have also acknowledged the importance of security during this critical period and pledged their commitment to peaceful campaigns.
Dr. Dampare encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities to help the police maintain safety. He also assured Ghanaians that the police are well-prepared to handle any situation that may arise during the elections.
This commendation comes as part of ongoing efforts by the Ghana Police Service to build trust with the public and improve their image. Over the past few months, the service has implemented various measures to ensure officers are equipped to handle the pressures of election security.
With the December 7 elections drawing near, this recognition serves as a reminder of the crucial role police officers play in protecting democracy and ensuring that Ghanaians can exercise their right to vote in a peaceful environment.
