Kwesi Nyantakyi Criticizes GFA Over Black Stars’ Poor Performances

Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has publicly criticized the Black Stars for their recent poor performances, stating that it is not a normal situation. The team has struggled immensely in their last few international tournaments, managing only one win in their last nine matches across three different competitions. The team’s underachievement was highlighted by their poor showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) where they failed to advance beyond the group stage, a rare occurrence for a team with such a rich football history. This continued with another disappointing exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they finished last in their group despite managing just one win.

Nyantakyi, who once served as a FIFA Executive Council member, expressed deep concern over the Black Stars’ performance, noting that the team’s decline is not just about one bad result but a series of unfortunate events. He pointed to the lack of consistency in coaching appointments as a significant factor affecting the team’s performance. Over the past five years, the GFA has made multiple coaching changes, which Nyantakyi believes have not helped in building a stable and competitive squad. He emphasized that these frequent changes reflect deeper problems within the GFA’s administration and strategy, ultimately hampering the Black Stars' ability to perform on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Nyantakyi urged the GFA to take immediate action to stabilize the Black Stars and ensure better preparations for upcoming competitions, starting with the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The team will face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025, where they will hope to reverse their fortunes. Nyantakyi’s comments serve as a wake-up call for the GFA, highlighting the need for a more stable and strategic approach to developing Ghana football and avoiding further setbacks in the future.
