Vote for women– Queen of Ghana Pageant CEO
Araba Biesema Crentsil, the Founder and CEO of the Queen of Ghana Pageant, has made a passionate call for Ghanaians to support women vying for political appointments and leadership positions in the upcoming general elections. She stressed that supporting women in politics aligns with the four key goals of women’s empowerment: economic, social, political, and psychological empowerment.
Speaking on the importance of women’s inclusion, Crentsil emphasized that the responsibility lies with the citizens of Ghana to ensure more women are included in political processes. "The onus is on us as a people to ensure that there is more women inclusion within our body politic; further ensuring an inclusive future for our girls and women," she said.
She highlighted that political empowerment plays a central role in advancing women’s participation in decision-making processes, leadership positions, and political representation. Crentsil noted that studies show higher numbers of women in parliament lead to stronger attention to issues that directly affect women. Women’s political participation is crucial for achieving gender equality and fostering genuine democracy. It ensures better accountability to women and promotes their active engagement in public decision-making.
Crentsil also underscored the importance of gender-sensitive governance reforms. "Political accountability to women begins with increasing the number of women in decision-making positions, but it cannot stop there," she stated. To achieve lasting change, she believes that reforms are needed to make elected officials more effective at promoting gender equality in public policies and ensuring their implementation. This is the core mission behind her Women For Leadership and Governance Campaign.
She further emphasized that gender equality in politics is not only about numbers. While equal parliamentary representation is a crucial first step, true gender-sensitive policymaking involves ensuring that women in these positions have influence and can drive the direction of parliamentary work. "The positions that women occupy in parliaments are also indicative of their influence in decision-making and their ability to set the direction of parliamentary work," she noted.
Crentsil’s Queen of Ghana Pageant, a groundbreaking initiative she founded, aims to empower women to step into leadership roles across the world. More than just a beauty contest, it serves as a platform for women to claim their rightful place in politics, governance, and beyond. The pageant stands as a call for the active involvement of women in shaping the future of Ghana and the world.
