Sacking Jean Mensa is Not a Primary Concern to Mahama - Haruna Iddrisu

Haruna Iddrisu, a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Minority Leader in Ghana's Parliament, has dismissed claims that the sacking of Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), is a key concern for John Dramani Mahama, the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming elections. According to Iddrisu, the focus of Mahama and the NDC is not on the removal of the EC chairperson but rather on addressing the pressing needs of the people of Ghana, especially in light of economic challenges.

Iddrisu emphasized that the NDC’s main priority is the improvement of Ghana's economy, better governance, and restoring hope to the citizens who are facing economic hardships. He noted that while the NDC has consistently raised concerns about the fairness of the 2020 elections, the issue of Jean Mensa’s leadership at the EC does not take precedence in Mahama’s political agenda.

The Minority Leader further stressed that Mahama’s focus is on solving the real issues affecting the average Ghanaian, such as inflation, unemployment, and the rising cost of living. He noted that rather than fixating on the sacking of the EC chairperson, the NDC is committed to securing a government that will prioritize these issues.

Iddrisu’s statement reflects the party’s strategic focus on voter welfare and promises to tackle the country’s most urgent socio-economic challenges. Despite ongoing criticisms of the EC’s handling of the 2020 elections, Iddrisu reiterated that the NDC’s concern remains with improving the country’s governance and ensuring that the people’s voices are heard and respected.

In conclusion, Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks reaffirm that for Mahama and the NDC, the task at hand is addressing the socio-economic difficulties facing Ghanaians. The issue of Jean Mensa’s tenure as EC chairperson, although relevant to past political disputes, is not considered a priority for the party in the run-up to the 2024 elections.
