Mahama's One-China Policy Stance – Reiterating Ghana’s Support for China’s Sovereignty

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering commitment to the One-China policy, reiterating the country's support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. In recent remarks, Mahama emphasized that Ghana recognizes the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, including Taiwan.

This stance aligns with Ghana's long-standing diplomatic relationship with China, dating back to the early 1960s. Mahama highlighted that Ghana's position remains consistent, regardless of shifts in the global political landscape. He stressed that recognizing China's sovereignty is essential for maintaining international peace and upholding diplomatic principles.

During his statement, Mahama acknowledged the significant role China plays in global economic development and its growing partnership with African nations. He praised the numerous infrastructure projects and investments China has supported in Ghana, including the construction of roads, schools, and hospitals, which have bolstered Ghana’s economic growth.

His comments come amid rising tensions in the international community over Taiwan's status, with many nations facing pressure to clarify their positions. Mahama's reiteration of support underscores Ghana's dedication to its diplomatic commitments. He expressed hope that peaceful resolutions can be reached to maintain stability in the Asia-Pacific region, avoiding conflicts that could affect global trade and security.

Mahama also took the opportunity to recognize the mutual benefits of Ghana-China relations. He noted that China’s contributions to Ghana's development are clear evidence of a productive partnership. "Ghana will continue to respect the One-China policy, which is rooted in mutual respect and the pursuit of shared prosperity," Mahama said.

This reaffirmation of support reflects the broader consensus among many African nations, which largely adhere to the One-China policy due to their historical ties with Beijing and China’s developmental assistance across the continent.

As international debates over sovereignty and territorial integrity intensify, Mahama’s statement serves as a reminder of Ghana's steady foreign policy principles. By standing with China, Ghana maintains its commitment to fostering peaceful international relations and supporting key global partners.

What are your thoughts on Mahama’s stance on the One-China policy? Do you think this approach benefits Ghana in the long run?
