The 2024 general elections in Ghana will go down as one of the most dramatic moments in the country’s political history, with President-elect John Dramani Mahama achieving a landslide victory. The election results, which saw Mahama secure a commanding lead of 1.6 million votes over his rival from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), left many stunned, including members of the ruling party.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a key spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, candidly shared his thoughts on the surprising outcome during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile. Aboagye, who was deeply involved in the NPP’s campaign strategy, described the experience as a bitter shock.
“You recall in 2016 when we won by a million votes,” he reflected. “At the time, it was seen as historic, and many thought it was an achievement that couldn’t easily be repeated. So to find out, at around 3:00 or 3:30 in the morning, that we were losing—by not just a small margin but 1.6 million votes—it was a big shock to us.”
The results were particularly difficult for the NPP, who entered the election season confident of their chances. After years of governance under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the party believed its record on economic development, infrastructure, and social interventions would secure voter approval. However, the electorate had other ideas.
Aboagye admitted that the NPP had anticipated a competitive race but had not prepared for such a resounding defeat. He acknowledged that Mahama’s campaign resonated deeply with the voters, particularly on issues like economic recovery, unemployment, and governance transparency.
Despite the disappointment, Aboagye displayed professionalism in conceding defeat and congratulating Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on their victory. “Winning an election is never easy,” he remarked. “It takes a lot of effort, dedication, and strategic planning. Mahama and his team worked tirelessly, and they deserve credit for their hard-fought campaign.”
He also emphasized the importance of respecting the people’s choice, adding that Ghana’s democracy relies on the peaceful transition of power and mutual acknowledgment of electoral outcomes.
“Now that the results are in, it’s our responsibility to respect the will of the people. The electorate has spoken, and as a democratic nation, we must honor that,” Aboagye said.
For the NPP, Mahama’s landslide victory is a moment for reflection. Aboagye called for introspection within the party, stressing the need to identify the reasons behind their loss and address the disconnect with the electorate.
“The results should serve as a wake-up call for us,” he said. “We must go back to the drawing board, listen to the people, and address the issues that matter to them most. This is a time for deep reflection and reevaluation of our approach.”
He highlighted the importance of reconnecting with grassroots supporters, rebuilding trust, and ensuring that the party’s policies align with the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.
For Mahama, the victory is nothing short of historic. Having lost the presidency in 2016 and failed to reclaim it in 2020, his return to power in 2024 is a testament to his resilience and ability to adapt to the evolving political landscape.
Mahama’s campaign focused on addressing key national issues, including economic instability and social inequality, which struck a chord with voters. His ability to secure such a decisive victory after two previous defeats underscores his enduring appeal as a leader who understands the needs of the people.
As Ghana prepares for Mahama’s presidency, there is much anticipation about the policies and leadership style he will bring to address the challenges facing the nation. Meanwhile, the NPP faces the daunting task of rebuilding its image and formulating a strategy for the future.
Aboagye expressed optimism that the NPP could bounce back with the right leadership and vision. “This is not the end of the road for us,” he said. “We have a lot to learn from this experience, but I believe we have the strength and determination to come back stronger.”
He urged party members to rally together and focus on unity, innovation, and effective communication to regain the trust of the electorate.
The 2024 elections have undoubtedly reshaped Ghana’s political landscape. For the NPP, the loss is a humbling reminder of the power of the people. For the NDC, Mahama’s victory is a moment of redemption and renewed hope.
As the nation moves forward, the focus will be on how Mahama delivers on his campaign promises and how the NPP evolves to remain a significant force in Ghanaian politics. This election has not only highlighted the unpredictability of politics but also reinforced the strength of Ghana’s democracy in allowing the people’s voice to be heard.
