It’s disrespectful to mock my political journey based on my acting background – Dumelo.
Ghanaian actor and Member of Parliament-elect for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has hit back at critics who question his political abilities due to his background in the entertainment industry. Dumelo, who has successfully made the transition from acting to politics, shared his thoughts on the matter during an interview on Hitz FM on December 11.
Dumelo revealed that when he first announced his intention to pursue a political career, there were many who doubted his capability to succeed in this new field. Some critics, he noted, found it difficult to accept the idea of an actor becoming a politician. They mocked his decision, assuming that his entertainment background would hinder his potential to make meaningful contributions in the political arena.
In response to these criticisms, Dumelo expressed his frustration and described such mockery as disrespectful. He argued that no one should be judged solely based on their previous profession or public image. He pointed out that many successful politicians come from diverse professional backgrounds, including law, medicine, and business, yet their previous careers do not undermine their ability to serve as effective MPs. According to Dumelo, the same should be true for those coming from the entertainment industry.
I see it as a little bit disrespectful because you have lawyers, you have doctors, you have businessmen in Parliament, Dumelo stated during the interview. So, why should it be any different for someone from the entertainment industry? He made the case that every profession brings its own unique set of skills and perspectives that can be beneficial in the political arena. His background in entertainment, he emphasized, has helped him connect with people from various walks of life, and he believes this makes him an effective representative for his constituents.
Dumelo also highlighted that the entertainment industry itself is often misunderstood, with people failing to recognize the hard work, discipline, and public service required to succeed in show business. He argued that the skills he has developed as an actor—such as communication, public speaking, and understanding people's needs—are directly applicable to the role of a politician. The ability to connect with the public, listen to their concerns, and articulate solutions is, in his view, crucial to effective governance, regardless of one's professional background.
Furthermore, Dumelo expressed his confidence in his ability to contribute positively to Ghana's political landscape. As a politician, he is committed to bringing about real change and addressing the issues that matter most to the people in his constituency. His goal is to serve as a voice for the community, particularly in areas such as education, infrastructure, and economic development. He believes that his background in entertainment has made him more attuned to the needs of the public, and he is ready to use his platform and influence to advocate for positive change.
