SWAG Announces Nominees for 49th Awards Ceremony Celebrating Sports Excellence in Ghana
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has officially announced the nominees for the 49th edition of its prestigious SWAG Awards. These awards, celebrating outstanding achievements in sports, have been recognizing top-performing athletes and officials since 1975. Scheduled for January 24, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Center, the event will honor over 80 individuals who made significant contributions to sports development in Ghana over the past year. The nominees span various categories, reflecting the diversity and talent within the Ghanaian sports scene.
This year's SWAG Awards will include categories such as Corporate Awards, Meritorious Awards, Dedication and Valour, and Posthumous Awards, among others. The nominees for Corporate Awards include major sponsors like Access Bank, KGL, and AFE Lotto, demonstrating the critical role corporate partnerships play in supporting Ghanaian sports. In the Meritorious category, distinguished personalities such as Mr. Ernest Thompson in football and Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare for his role in the 13th African Games have been recognized for their invaluable contributions. The Dedication and Valour category celebrates athletes like Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare in cricket and Hannah Akua Humphrey in Taekwondo, showcasing the commitment and courage of these individuals in their respective sports.
The 49th SWAG Awards will also recognize exceptional achievements in specific sports disciplines, such as Boxing, Football, Athletics, and Swimming. Notable nominees include Amadu Mohammed and Joseph Commey for Boxer of the Year, as well as Joseph Paul Amoah and Edwin Gadayi in the Male Athlete of the Year category.
