WAEC Official Apologizes to Education Minister Over WASSCE Results Comment

In a recent development, John Kapi, the Director of Public Affairs for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has retracted his earlier criticism of Ghana's Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Kapi had previously labeled Dr. Adutwum's assurance regarding the timely release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results as "scandalous."

The controversy began when Dr. Adutwum assured the public that the WASSCE results would be released by Sunday, December 29. In response, Kapi expressed skepticism, citing the government's delayed financial commitments to WAEC, which he believed could impede the timely release of the results. He stated that such assurances were unfounded given the circumstances.
The education community and the general public await the release of the WASSCE results, hopeful that such collaborative efforts will lead to improved efficiency and transparency in the future.

However, following discussions and a reassessment of the situation, Kapi has issued a public apology to Dr. Adutwum. He acknowledged that his choice of words was inappropriate and expressed regret for any distress caused. Kapi emphasized WAEC's commitment to maintaining a collaborative relationship with the Ministry of Education to ensure the smooth administration and release of examination results.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by educational bodies in meeting deadlines, especially when financial constraints are involved. It also underscores the importance of clear communication between governmental agencies and educational institutions to maintain public trust.

As of now, WAEC has received additional funding from the government, which is expected to facilitate the timely processing and release of the WASSCE results. Both WAEC and the Ministry of Education have reiterated their commitment to upholding the integrity of the examination process and ensuring that candidates receive their results without undue delay.
