Barcelona’s bid to secure Dani Olmo’s registration for the remainder of the season has been denied by a court, meaning the Spain international will be unable to play for the club starting January 1. Olmo, 26, was signed from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of 60 million euros (£51 million) in August, but due to La Liga's strict wage cap regulations, Barcelona could only register him for the first half of the season. The Spanish club had hoped to extend Olmo's registration for the second half, particularly after their squad was hit with long-term injuries. However, the court sided with La Liga, stating that the club’s request did not meet the necessary conditions for provisional registration.

La Liga welcomed the court’s decision, emphasizing that additional spending allowances should only be granted to address long-term injuries and not to register players whose salaries exceed the league’s financial limits. Barcelona’s registration of Olmo was initially a temporary measure when the club’s injury crisis allowed them to adjust their wage allocation. This temporary arrangement, which permitted Olmo’s inclusion for four months, is set to expire at the end of December. The court ruling has effectively ended any hope of registering Olmo for the remainder of the season unless the appeal currently filed by the club is successful. This appeal will be heard on December 30, just one day before the registration deadline.

Olmo, a key player for Spain in their successful European Championship campaign in the summer, has had an impressive start to his Barcelona career, scoring six goals in 15 appearances this season. Despite this, Barcelona’s ongoing financial struggles have made it difficult for the club to navigate La Liga’s financial fair play regulations. The court’s decision places additional pressure on Barcelona, who are currently third in the La Liga standings, trailing Atletico Madrid by three points. The club is hopeful that their appeal will be accepted, allowing Olmo to continue playing and contributing to their campaign. However, the situation highlights the continued challenges Barcelona faces in balancing their financial obligations with their ambitions on the field.
