President Nana Akufo-Addo has awarded Ghana’s outgoing Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, with the prestigious “Order of the Star of Ghana – Officer Award” during the 2024 National Honours ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Centre on December 30, 2024. The award is the highest national honor, recognizing Dr. Bawumia’s dedicated public service during his eight-year tenure as Vice President. Despite his defeat in the recently concluded presidential election to former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, Dr. Bawumia’s contributions to governance, economic reforms, and public administration were celebrated. His running mate in the election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also received the "Order of the Volta – Officer Award" for his significant contributions to public service.

The event acknowledged individuals from diverse sectors, including education, health, agriculture, sports, judiciary, and media, for their service to national development. Among the recipients was JoyNews journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, who was conferred with the "Order of the Volta (Membership)" for his fearless journalism. Donkor’s investigative work, particularly in exposing the harmful effects of illegal mining and advocating for environmental conservation, was highly praised. His recognition underscores the vital role of journalism in addressing societal challenges and fostering sustainable development. Other awardees included ministers of state, military personnel, civil servants, and professionals from various sectors whose dedication and sacrifices have significantly impacted the nation.

The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, ministers of state, and government officials. President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of honoring those who have demonstrated exceptional service and commitment to the country. The awards not only celebrated individual achievements but also emphasized the collective effort required for national progress. This year’s honorees represent a cross-section of Ghana’s hardworking citizens, who have contributed to the nation’s growth through diverse fields of expertise. The 2024 National Honours ceremony served as a testament to Ghana’s appreciation of excellence, hard work, and the spirit of national service.
