The Ghana Education Service (GES) has maintained that the reopening dates for Senior High Schools (SHS) will not be altered despite a request from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) for a postponement. CHASS had earlier raised concerns about unresolved financial constraints affecting second-cycle schools, warning that these issues could disrupt the reopening process if not addressed before January 3, 2025. The organization issued a formal statement advising against reopening under the current circumstances. However, in a response on January 2, GES confirmed that the 2024/25 academic calendar would remain unchanged. SHS students are expected to resume classes on January 3, while students in primary and Junior High Schools (JHS) will return on January 8.

GES acknowledged the concerns raised by CHASS and assured stakeholders that it is actively engaging with the Ministry of Education to find solutions. The agency emphasized that these challenges would not derail the scheduled reopening, highlighting the importance of adhering to the academic calendar to ensure a smooth academic year. The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some stakeholders expressing relief over the continuity of the calendar, while others remain concerned about the unresolved issues highlighted by CHASS. Despite these differing opinions, GES reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the reopening of schools proceeds as planned.

To ensure the successful commencement of the academic year, GES has urged all stakeholders, including students, parents, and school staff, to take note of the reopening dates and make the necessary preparations. The agency stressed the need for cooperation and understanding as it works to address the challenges cited by CHASS. By prioritizing dialogue and swift action, GES aims to resolve the financial and logistical issues affecting second-cycle schools. With these measures in place, it is optimistic that the academic year will begin smoothly and without further disruptions. The GES remains committed to providing quality education and fostering a stable learning environment for all students.
