Ghana's Rise as a Premier Destination for International Sports
In his final State of the Nation Address delivered on January 3, 2025, President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed immense pride in the transformation of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, positioning the nation as a key hub for international sports events. One of the major highlights of his speech was the significant strides made in improving the country's sports facilities. Akufo-Addo emphasized that the construction of over 150 modern AstroTurf pitches across various regions of Ghana has played a pivotal role in enhancing the nation’s sporting capabilities. Additionally, the rehabilitation of existing stadiums has greatly contributed to the development of a more robust sports ecosystem in the country. These investments have made it possible for Ghana to host major international events, including the 13th African Games held in Accra. Despite facing numerous challenges, the successful hosting of the games in 2023 demonstrated the country’s ability to deliver world-class sporting experiences.
The 2023 African Games, which took place from March 8 to 23, 2024, was a remarkable success, attracting over 13,000 athletes and officials from across the African continent. The competitions took place at ten different venues throughout the country, further showcasing the nation’s readiness to host large-scale events. Ghana emerged with an impressive 69 medals, demonstrating not only the country’s sporting prowess but also the effectiveness of its investment in sports infrastructure. Akufo-Addo noted that the government invested an estimated $195 million into the improvement of sports venues, including the construction of the Borteyman Sports Complex and the completion of the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon. These state-of-the-art facilities significantly contributed to the smooth operation of the games, providing athletes and spectators with top-tier amenities.
The President also acknowledged that the investment in sports infrastructure extends beyond just the construction of pitches and stadiums. By focusing on upgrading facilities across the country, Ghana has solidified its position as a leading destination for international sports competitions.
