West Ham Considering Sacking Julen Lopetegui After Heavy Losses

West Ham United is reportedly weighing the possibility of parting ways with manager Julen Lopetegui after a string of disappointing results, including a heavy 4-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday. Despite sources denying that Lopetegui has already been dismissed, it is clear that the 58-year-old is under immense pressure. The former Real Madrid and Spain manager was on the brink of being sacked after a difficult period in November, but a much-needed victory against Wolves sparked a four-game unbeaten streak. However, the recent back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City have left the Hammers languishing in 14th place, only seven points clear of the relegation zone. These performances have heightened concerns about Lopetegui’s ability to lead the team, and with the club's future uncertain, West Ham's management is reportedly considering their next steps.

Lopetegui’s tenure at West Ham has been marked by inconsistent performances, particularly in the wake of David Moyes’ departure at the end of last season. Moyes had faced criticism for the team’s lackluster style of play, and many hoped that Lopetegui’s appointment would bring a new direction. However, the Spanish coach has struggled to improve both the team’s results and playing style, and West Ham’s performances have remained lackluster. There are also reports of behind-the-scenes tensions, as technical director Tim Steidten has been photographed in conversation with former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, the timing of the photograph has fueled speculation that Potter could be in line to replace Lopetegui, should the club decide to part ways with him.

Looking ahead, the club’s immediate concerns include strengthening the squad during the January transfer window. West Ham is in need of a striker, especially after the injuries to captain Jarrod Bowen and forward Michail Antonio. Steidten has reportedly moved away from the club’s training ground to focus on the transfer market, though sources have downplayed any link between this decision and Lopetegui’s uncertain future. West Ham’s next fixture is a critical FA Cup third-round match against Aston Villa, and it remains to be seen whether Lopetegui will continue to be in charge for that match. The club’s management will likely take the coming days to assess their options, as they seek to stabilize the team and avoid further slide down the Premier League table.
