Novak Djokovic, now at 37, continues to defy the typical expectations of athletes in his age group, especially in the physically demanding sport of tennis. As he prepares for the 2025 Australian Open, his goal of securing a 25th Grand Slam title—breaking the all-time record—remains within reach. A win at the Australian Open would also bring him closer to Margaret Court's record, making this tournament significant for his legacy.

Despite his age, Djokovic has maintained an elite level of performance, although 2024 was the first year since 2017 that he did not win a Grand Slam title. His one major achievement last season was clinching Olympic gold, a long-awaited milestone that added to his already extensive collection of trophies.

Many experts, including six-time Grand Slam winner Stefan Edberg, acknowledge that while Djokovic's age is a factor, his vast experience and competitive fire are key advantages. Edberg highlights the Australian Open and Wimbledon as potential targets for Djokovic, considering the experience he has on grass and his historical success in these tournaments.

However, Djokovic's age is an undeniable challenge. Ken Rosewall remains the oldest player to win a Grand Slam at 37, and both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s last major titles came at 36. But Djokovic’s physical fitness and hunger for records continue to drive him. Additionally, his decision to play more tournaments in 2025 could help sharpen his form, despite some struggles in his early 2025 matches.

The rise of younger stars like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, along with his rivalry with other top players, adds to the challenge, but Edberg notes that players like Djokovic are no longer discouraged by age. With smarter scheduling and coaching adjustments, players are now capable of competing at the highest level into their thirties.

Another key development for Djokovic in 2025 is his partnership with Andy Murray as his coach. Murray’s recent retirement means he has fresh insight into current tour dynamics and can offer tactical and motivational support, potentially creating an added spark for Djokovic in his pursuit of more titles.

In short, despite his age and the increasing competition from younger players, Djokovic’s determination and his unyielding pursuit of records make him a formidable contender. As Edberg suggests, you cannot count him out yet, and his presence in the upcoming Australian Open will be one to watch closely.
