Oxford English Dictionary Adds 20 Nigerian Slangs, Including "Japa," "Agbero," and "419"

In a significant recognition of Nigerian culture and language, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added 20 Nigerian slangs and expressions to its latest update. The additions include popular words like "Japa," "Agbero," "Eba," "419," "Yahoo Boy," and "Abi," among others.

According to Kingsley Ugwuanyi, a Nigerian English consultant to the OED, the additions reflect the unique ways Nigerians express themselves and showcase the country's culture and creativity. Ugwuanyi expressed excitement about his role in drafting the words and recording their pronunciations, which will help non-Nigerians accurately articulate the words.

The added words are a mix of Pidgin English vocabulary and everyday expressions used by Nigerians. For example, "Japa" refers to the emigration of Nigerians to other countries in search of better opportunities, while "419" refers to a type of internet fraud. "Agbero" is a term used to describe a tout or a street urchin, and "Eba" is a type of Nigerian food made from cassava flour.

The inclusion of these words in the OED is a significant milestone for Nigerian language and culture. It recognizes the importance of Nigerian English and its unique expressions, which are widely used in the country and beyond.

The OED's decision to add Nigerian slangs to its dictionary is also a reflection of the growing influence of Nigerian culture globally. Nigerian music, movies, and literature have gained international recognition, and the inclusion of Nigerian slangs in the OED is another testament to the country's cultural export.

The 20 Nigerian words added to the OED are:

1. 419

2. Abi

3. Adire

4. Agbero

5. Area boy

6. Cross-carpet

13. Japa

14. Kanuri

The inclusion of these words in the OED is a celebration of Nigerian language and culture, and it will help to promote a better understanding of Nigerian expressions and idioms globally.
