ECG Commits GH¢82 Million to Enhance Central Region's Power Infrastructure in 2024
The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a substantial investment of GH¢82 million aimed at bolstering the power infrastructure in the Central Region throughout 2024. This initiative is set to significantly enhance electricity distribution and reliability for residents and businesses in the area.
Key Components of the Investment:
Installation of 200 New Transformers: To address the growing demand for electricity and mitigate issues related to overloaded transformers, ECG plans to deploy 200 new transformers across various communities. This strategic move is expected to reduce power outages by up to 80%, ensuring a more stable power supply.
Replacement of Rotten Poles: Recognizing the safety hazards and service disruptions caused by deteriorating poles, ECG will undertake a comprehensive replacement program to fortify the structural integrity of the power distribution network.
Upgrade to Smart Prepaid Meters: In a bid to modernize billing systems and enhance customer convenience, ECG intends to replace 180,000 non-smart prepaid meters with advanced smart prepaid meters in key areas including Swedru, Kasoa, Winneba, and Cape Coast. Additionally, over 300,000 postpaid meters will be transitioned to prepaid systems across the region.
Establishment of Switching Stations: To further stabilize the power supply, new switching stations will be constructed at Twifo Praso and Breman Asikuma. These stations will facilitate efficient power distribution and provide alternative routes for electricity flow during maintenance or unforeseen disruptions.
Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Compliance:
ECG has identified challenges such as the proliferation of fake meters and illegal connections, which undermine revenue and compromise service quality. In 2023 alone, the company detected approximately 31,000 counterfeit meters in the region, recovering about GH¢6 million from the perpetrators. To combat these issues, ECG is implementing strict measures, including legal actions against offenders and public education campaigns to encourage compliance.
Commitment to Customer Service:
Emphasizing the importance of customer satisfaction, ECG is investing in staff training to improve response times and service delivery. The company is also launching the "Operation No Free Consumption" campaign to ensure all electricity usage is accurately billed and paid for, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.
Looking Ahead:
With these strategic investments and initiatives, ECG aims to create a more resilient and efficient power distribution network in the Central Region. The anticipated improvements are expected to attract investments, foster economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents. As the projects unfold throughout 2024, stakeholders are encouraged to support ECG's efforts in transforming the region's energy landscape.
